METROLINX — A white roof absorbs less thermal energy.

TORONTO — GO Transit’s Network Operations Centre (NOC) has been awarded LEED Gold certification in green building leadership.

The NOC helps execute GO Transit’s daily operations, monitoring the entire GO network around the clock, explains a release from Metrolinx.

The NOC itself was constructed with sustainability at the forefront of its design. Recycled materials were used on the project including concrete and steel.

“Regional manufacturing was favoured in the design and most wood used on the project achieved ,” the release reads. “Notably, over 75 per cent of construction waste was diverted from landfills and recycled.”

The centre’s design has resulted in a 41 per cent energy cost reduction as compared to similar structures built to standards.

The NOC contains a white roof that supports the reduction of local heat island effects, electrochromic glass that can adjust its transparency to moderate heat and light and native and drought-tolerant vegetation to reduce the need for water onsite.

Low flow plumbing fixtures support a more than 30 per cent reduction in portable water use, Metrolinx adds, and low volatile organic compounds were selected for their friendliness to the health of humans and the environment.

Other recent sustainability efforts include achieving and at the maintenance and storage facility.
