This week on the Construction Record podcast digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with SWTCH Energy Inc. CEO Carter Li and IBI Group global director of innovation Deepak Darda about an innovative project in Toronto that uses blockchain technology in electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 55 Clair St. West in Toronto.
Li and Darda explained during the interview how the multi-residential building allows for charged vehicles to help power the building, meaning it relies less on the grid and more on locally sourced energy. The blockchain allows the system to credit those who are contributing the most energy to the building systems as well as participating in increasing the building’s sustainability.
The building also serves as headquarters to IBI Group and to the Smart City Sandbox, a pilot project meant to address barriers to EV adoption and creation of energy distribution systems.
